The Congressional Black Caucus Statement on the Murder of Breonna Taylor

Her name was Breonna Taylor; her “crime,” sleeping in the comfort of her home while Black in America. She was a first responder who answered the call when a global pandemic hit her community. She served as an EMT, saving lives right alongside police every day.

The murder of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, is sadly just the latest case of police brutality gaining national attention. Yet again, the recipient of that brutality is Black. Breonna was murdered in March, yet this incident only recently came to light because of a public outcry, just days after the news of the lynching of Ahmaud Arbery sparked global outrage. Both incidents demonstrate a complete lack of transparency and accountability when it comes to the killings of Black men and women.

Our justice system is not just failing us. It has become complicit in our demise.

The Congressional Black Caucus calls on the Department of Justice to conduct a thorough investigation into all cases of police brutality and racially-motivated hate crimes.

Enough is enough.
