WASHINGTON – Congressman Steven Horsford, Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, issued the following statement in response to the President's State of the Union address:

“Thank you, President Biden. The family of Tyre Nichols and the CBC asked President Biden to use the State of the Union to speak to the nation and to call for the passage of meaningful public safety and accountability reforms for all communities, and he met the moment.

“President Biden elevated Tyre Nichols's story and tapped into the spirit of all Americans who are calling for accountability, transparency and standards in policing. The CBC agrees with the President that ‘public safety depends on public trust… when that trust is violated, they must be held accountable’ and were encouraged that many of our Republican colleagues expressed their support, including Speaker McCarthy.

“The CBC will continue to build broad support, and call on our colleagues, in both parties and the House and Senate to work together, as the President suggested, to craft meaningful legislative solutions that will save lives and protect all of our communities."
