President Trump Provides More Empty Promises and No Solutions to End Mass Shootings
Washington,
August 5, 2019
Today, President Trump held a press conference following two mass shootings that took place 13 hours apart. These shootings took place in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas and took the lives of many innocent Americans. Congresswoman Karen Bass, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement in response: “This morning, the President provided more empty promises to the American people and little to no solutions,” said Chairwoman Bass. “Our communities are constantly recovering from senseless acts of gun violence and the American people are demanding action. It is no longer acceptable to provide your thoughts and prayers or blame video games and the internet. The Black Caucus has worked vigorously with House Democrats to pass universal background check legislation and the Charleston Loophole bill which was introduced by Majority Whip Jim Clyburn. Now, we are calling on Majority Leader Mitch McConnel to end the Senate’s recess and pass these measures immediately. “Since day one of this presidency, we’ve seen a drastic increase in white supremacy, racism, and hate crimes. Although President Trump called these recent shootings ‘acts of domestic terrorism’, the Black Caucus cannot ignore the role President Trump’s rhetoric has played in fanning the flames of division. Americans need a true leader and it’s time for President Trump to step up to the plate. It is time to lead and protect every American – no matter your race or the color of your skin.” |
