Today, the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Cedric L. Richmond (D-LA-02), released the following statement on the passing of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY-25):

“Today Congress lost its only microbiologist.

“Congresswoman Louise Slaughter was a champion for justice and equality, one who worked tirelessly to make this country a more perfect union. She was also an inspiration to young women and girls who dreamed of holding public office.

“During her 30-plus-year career in Congress, she passed several historic pieces of legislation, including the Violence Against Women’s Acct, which has reduced cases of domestic violence by 67 percent since 1994, the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which restored protections against pay discrimination, and legislation to ensure that women and people of color are included in all federal health trials. In addition, as the first woman to chair the powerful House Rules Committee, Congresswoman Slaughter was instrumental in passing the Affordable Care Act.

“The 48-members of the Congressional Black Caucus send our thoughts and prayers to Congresswoman Slaughter’s loved ones. During some of our most difficult legislative battles, Congresswoman Slaughter stood by our side. We will miss her and her leadership.”
