Today, the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressman Cedric L. Richmond (D-LA-02), made public a November 6 letter he sent to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson requesting “special attention to” and “periodic updates” on the ongoing investigation by Greek authorities into the death of Bakari Henderson, an American citizen from Texas who was tragically murdered in July while in Greece.
Henderson was a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, and had traveled to Greece to take photos for a clothing line he had started.
“The loss of young life is always a tragedy, especially when it is a young man with so much potential,” Chairman Richmond said. “I grieve alongside the parents of Bakari Henderson as they seek justice for their son in Greece. An American citizen was murdered abroad and it is the duty of the United States government to ensure that justice is served no matter where the crime was committed.”
Of the nine men who were charged with Henderson’s murder, at least two have fled back to their home countries in Serbia. An investigating judge in Greece continues to review the facts and forensics of the case and will refer it to a public prosecutor once the investigation is complete. No trial date has been set.
