Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Marcia L. Fudge released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in celebration of the second inauguration of President Barack Obama:
“Today we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of our country’s greatest citizens and leaders. We also congratulate President Barack Obama on being inaugurated for a second term.
“Later this year, we will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom led by Dr. King during a time where high levels of unemployment permeated the African American community and people of color faced persistent discrimination at all levels of society. Though he may be most well-known for his civil rights advocacy, Dr. King was also a steadfast advocate for the economic rights of all people, particularly for those living in poverty. On August 28, 1963, Dr. King and thousands of Americans of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds ascended on the nation’s capital to call on our elected officials to take action.
“Today, as thousands of Americans gather in Washington, DC to celebrate President Barack Obama taking his second oath of office, we must remember the spirit of that day in our history, when renewing this country’s promise once again became our top priority. Dr. King spent his life fighting for and standing on the principle that every individual have the right to realize their version of the American Dream. It was his dream that each of us have the conditions and opportunities available in this country to realize our own.
“I congratulate President Barack Obama on beginning his second term and I urge every individual to reflect on Dr. King’s words and his work. I and Members of the CBC also look forward to working with the President and our colleagues in Congress on ways to strengthen the foundation laid by Dr. King and on ensuring his dream remains a source of inspiration and guidance for everyone’s reality.”
