CBC Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on the Death of Americans in Libya

Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement today condemning the attack that killed four Americans in Libya:

“I am extremely saddened by the news of the heinous attacks on the U.S. Envoy in Libya. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of Ambassador John Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith and the two other American diplomats in Benghazi who exemplified the best America has to offer the world. Their work was about assisting Libya with its democratic transition, not about criticizing the religious principles upon which many of the people in Libya stand.

“This is not the time to relinquish in partisan or religious divides, but to unite behind the American values of democracy and freedom that Ambassador Stevens, his staff and many more Americans stationed around the world risk their lives for each day. Their sacrifices are not made in vain.

“The Congressional Black Caucus strongly condemns these brutal acts of violence, and expects those responsible to be brought to justice.”
