Since its establishment in 1971, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has been committed to using the full Constitutional power, statutory authority, and financial resources of the federal government to ensure that African Americans and other marginalized communities in the United States have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
Today, the Congressional Black Caucus Chairman, Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-LA-02), issued the following statement commemorating Black History Month:
“This month we remember the hills and valleys of our history, a history that challenged and continues to challenge America to live up to its highest ideals. This is why we celebrate. Since slavery, African Americans have demonstrated what it means to make the union more perfect by making the impossible possible.
“Unfortunately, the battles our community faces are not over. The racial disparities in education, health care, unemployment and other areas of public life, and the all too frequent killings of unarmed African Americans are proof of that. We have come a long way but we still have a long way to go.
“But this is exactly why knowing our history is so important. When we know our history we can see that new battles are old battles and the tools needed to fight them are tools we already have. The Congressional Black Caucus will continue to fight these battles in both houses of Congress to ensure equality for the millions of African Americans our members represent.”
