Congressional Black Caucus Statement Opposing Nomination of Jeremy Carl

Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:

“Today, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will begin confirmation hearings for Jeremy Carl to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations at the U.S. Department of State. The Congressional Black Caucus vehemently opposes the nomination of Jeremy Carl, not only due to his troubling anti-Black ideology, but also because of his disconcerting and limited record on issues related to international diplomacy.

“In addition to Mr. Carl’s noted opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, having called the landmark legislation an ‘anti-white weapon’, Mr. Carl has made numerous disturbing remarks over the last several years regarding race relations in this country and the alleged victimization of white Americans at the expense of minority populations. Beyond his troubling remarks on civil rights, his commitment to denigrating Black history deeply concerns our Caucus. Mr. Carl has not only been steadfast in his campaign to oppose the teaching of Black history in primary and secondary education, but his public record also reflects a penchant for conflating Black history with anti-white propaganda.

“The CBC unequivocally opposes the erasure of our community in any capacity, full stop. We recognize that ignoring the injustices committed against our communities in the past increases the likelihood that they will be repeated.

“We are deeply disturbed by the notion that a senior-level official in the State Department — responsible for representing our nation on the world stage and engaging with a diverse set of international partners — would hold such ideologies and beliefs. We believe Mr. Carl is not equipped to represent this nation and would harm U.S. credibility globally. For these reasons, the CBC calls on the Committee to reject Mr. Carl’s nomination.”
