Congressional Black Caucus Statement on the Assault of Rep. Ilhan Omar

Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:

“This evening, while addressing constituents at a town hall in Minneapolis, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was assaulted by an individual who has since been taken into police custody.

“We are outraged by this brazen attack on our colleague and relieved that Congresswoman Omar is safe. We thank the Minneapolis Police Department for their swift response and the apprehension of the individual responsible.

“There is absolutely no excuse for violence and intimidation in our politics. Congresswoman Omar was faithfully executing her duties to her constituents, and despite being subjected to constant right-wing attacks, she continues to lead and represent Minnesota’s 5th District with dignity and courage.”

“We stand with Congresswoman Omar and the city of Minneapolis at this crucial time and call on our colleagues across the aisle to step up to de-escalate the dangerous rhetoric that fuels attacks like the one we witnessed this evening. Enough is enough.”
