Today, House Republicans passed one of the most harmful pieces of legislation that we have seen in recent history. The “Big Ugly Bill” passed the United States House of Representatives this afternoon with a vote of 218-214, effectively cutting off millions of Americans from critical healthcare and other critical safety net programs that keep our communities afloat.
Members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:
Today, House Republicans turned their backs on hard-working Americans across this nation. The 'Big Ugly Bill' will strip healthcare from over 17 million people, put 42 million at risk of food insecurity, and deepen the burden on our middle and working class—already strained by President Trump’s tariff-laden economy.
This legislation is nothing more than a package of financial incentives and tax breaks for billionaires, paid for at the expense of everyone else. It represents the largest wealth transfer in American history.
House Republicans have chosen to ignore the widespread pleas to lower the cost of living. Instead, they’ve prioritized the financial interests of the top one percent in a reverse Robin Hood scheme that guarantees a steady stream of wealth to their billionaire donors at the behest of Donald Trump.
As the conscience of the Congress, the Congressional Black Caucus condemns this bill. House Republicans and the Trump administration have betrayed the American people and saddled this generation and future generations with trillions of dollars in debt. Today marks a grim turning point in the progress of our civil society. For Donald Trump and House Republicans, the cruelty is the point.
