Since its establishment in 1971, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has been committed to using the full Constitutional power, statutory authority, and financial resources of the federal government to ensure that African Americans and other marginalized communities in the United States have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:
“Today’s incident at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark that led to the arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka and the man-handling, assault and mistreatment of Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica McIver, and Rob Menendez by federal immigration agents, raises serious concerns about the Trump Administration's lack of transparency and treatment of individuals being held in immigrant detention facilities.
“Rep. Watson Coleman, as part of the New Jersey delegation, and Rep. McIver, in her capacity as a member of the Homeland Security Committee, two of our CBC members along side Rep. Rob Menendez, were present to inspect the conditions at Delaney Hall as a part of their oversight responsibilities as members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“The Trump Administration has time and again ripped through the democratic norms of checks and balances as enshrined in our Constitution. As a co-equal branch of government, we are demanding answers and transparency, not only of the decisions that led to this assault and mistreatment, but also to the conditions and treatment of individuals being held by the Trump Administration ICE detention centers.”
