Congressional Black Caucus Holds Press Conference on Protecting Veterans’ Benefits

On April 9th, 2025, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and Members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a press conference to address President Trump and House Republicans’ efforts to cut veterans’ benefits. The press conference was held in advance of the House Democratic Steering & Policy Committee's Hearing on Republican Cuts Targeting Veterans.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus offered the following quotes:

“Our veterans put their lives on the line to protect our nation; the very least that we can do is take care of them when they return home,” said CBC Chair Yvette Clarke. "Republicans claim to respect our brave American soldiers, but their most recent attempts to slash their benefits show us otherwise. It is unacceptable that this administration seeks to cut off essential resources for our nation’s heroes. It is unconscionable that President Trump has canceled contracts to end veteran homelessness and prevent veteran suicides. It is reprehensible that this administration has carried out the largest firing of veterans in American history. President Trump must put an end to these attacks on our veterans. Enough is enough."

"Our veterans have sacrificed their lives. When they signed up to protect our country, our way of life, we promised that we would take care of them and their family,” said Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. “By cutting veterans working at the VA and defunding the PACT Act, we’re hurting them and their loved ones. We need to hold everyone to task and not allow these cuts.”

“I never want to hear another Republican claim they support our nation’s veterans after passing a budget resolution that includes sweeping cuts to veteran services,” said Congressman Herb Conaway. “As both a veteran and a doctor, I’ve seen firsthand the tremendous impact VA programs have on our nation’s heroes. This budget resolution is a slap in the face to those who have served. I’m committed to fighting back against any cuts that would harm veterans — and I know the CBC is too.”
