Congressional Black Caucus Statement on the Passing of Former U.S. Representative Mia Love

Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:

“It is with profound sadness that the Congressional Black Caucus has learned of the passing of our dear friend and former colleague, Congresswoman Mia Love of Utah. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

“Former Representative Love left her mark on the Congress as a member of the CBC and House Financial Services Committee, as the first Black woman elected to the House of Representatives as a Republican, the first Black person elected to Congress from Utah, and the first Haitian-American elected to Congress.

“Born in Brooklyn to parents who immigrated to New York from Haiti, Congresswoman Love always believed in the promise of America. She would go on to serve in Utah’s Saratoga Springs City Council, then as mayor of Saratoga Springs before being elected to the U.S. Congress in 2015.

“In recent weeks, Congresswoman Love wrote of her living wish for America in her hometown paper, the Deseret News. She spoke poignantly about her faith, patriotism, and the role we all play in America’s future.

“Congresswoman Love was devoted to her family and community, and we are in deep gratitude for her many years of service to our nation. May she rest in peace.”

Former U.S. Representative Marcia L. Fudge, who served as Chair of the CBC during Rep. Love’s tenure, offered the following quote:

“Mia Love never compromised her principles, yet was an accomplished and respected legislator. More importantly she was a good and faithful friend. I will miss her.”
