Congressional Black Caucus Statement on Sonya Massey
Washington,
July 25, 2024
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee reintroduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act earlier this year. Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford (NV-04) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement on the fatal police shooting of Sonya Massey: βThe Congressional Black Caucus offers our sincerest condolences to the family of Sonya Massey, and we are holding her family and loved ones in our prayers during this time. Sonya Massey called the police β who are supposed to protect and serve the community β for help and was murdered when officers responded to her home. This is an unfathomable tragedy and breach of trust with the community. We have seen time and again incidents of Black women from Breonna Taylor to Atatiana Jefferson killed by police in their homes. Congress must take action and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act now to advance public safety and police accountability.β |
