Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12-8 to move the nomination of Loretta Lynch, nominee for U.S. Attorney General, to the full Senate for a confirmation vote.
CBC Chairman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) and members Representatives Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), Marcia Fudge (OH-11), Joyce Beatty (OH-03), and Alma Adams (NC-12) were among those in attendance during today’s historic proceedings.
CBC Chairman Butterfield issued the following statement:
“Loretta Lynch has a distinguished legal career as a well-respected lawyer and federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York. Having zealously prosecuted cases involving public corruption, narcotics and violent crime, Ms. Lynch has the perfect set of professional credentials and possesses high moral character and integrity. I am pleased that after a significant delay, the Judiciary Committee has moved her nomination to the full Senate, where I believe she will be confirmed with strong bipartisan support.
“Throughout Ms. Lynch’s confirmation process, several Republicans have continuously asserted their derision towards the President. However, Senators in both parties have lauded Ms. Lynch’s qualifications and her sterling career. While Ms. Lynch was nominated by President Obama in November, she did not receive a hearing until January and only today, four weeks since Ms. Lynch appeared before the Committee, did she receive a vote. If confirmed, Ms. Lynch would be the first African-American woman to serve in the role of U.S. Attorney General.”
