“President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris have nominated an accomplished, respected trailblazer as the next Secretary of the Department of Defense. Lloyd Austin is a trusted and crisis-tested leader who has broken barriers in his historic ascent to the highest ranks of the military,” said Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Karen Bass.

“Lloyd Austin has had a decorated military career, serving more than 40 years in the Army, in which he served as Chief of the Joint Operations, J-3, Joint Staff, and Director of the Joint Staff. He retired from the Army in 2016 as Commander of CENTCOM, the U.S. Central Command, where he oversaw America’s military strategy and joint operations throughout the Middle East and in Afghanistan,” said CBC First 100 Days Transition Task Force Chair Steven Horsford. “The most essential of the functions of the Secretary of Defense is recommending to the Commander-in-Chief, when necessary, to send our men and women into conflict. Lloyd Austin understands this awesome responsibility and has, over the course of almost 3 years, returned 150,000 of our brave soldiers back home safely, the single greatest achievement that proves his qualifications. It takes a high level of skill, strategy, and diplomatic prowess to accomplish an effort of this magnitude.

“The Congressional Black Caucus has the utmost confidence that Lloyd Austin will be the Defense Secretary that our country needs right now. Austin knows the human cost of war firsthand and has comforted Gold Star Families who have lost their loved one in conflict. President-Elect Biden and Lloyd Austin strongly believe that military force should only be used as a last resort,” said Congressman Horsford.

“Secretary-designate Austin is the best person to carry out the Biden-Harris administration’s military and defense strategy — he knows the Pentagon inside and out and has demonstrated extraordinary leadership across a lifetime of distinguished service. He will work tirelessly to depoliticize and rebuild the Defense Department, support our troops and their families, revitalize our global partnerships and alliances, and ensure we keep our country safe and secure. Lloyd Austin has all of the necessary qualifications to be confirmed as the next Secretary of Defense.”

“We urge our colleagues to support this historic nomination, approve the waiver required, and confirm Lloyd Austin’s nomination for the security of our nation.”
