The President’s abuse of power knows no end. It has been reported that the food boxes distributed by the Farmers to Families Food Box (FFFB) Program now includes a signed letter by President Trump.  Using a federal relief program to distribute a self-promoting letter from the President to American families in the months leading up to the presidential election is inappropriate and a violation of federal law.  The Hatch Act prohibits executive branch employees from using their official authority or influence for the purposes of affecting the result of an election.

This is not the first time President Trump has used this public health crisis as an opportunity to promote his own political interests. A few months ago, the President insisted on enclosing letters with his signature to millions of Americans who received stimulus money from the CARES Act, a congressional package, which created an undue delay in their distribution to families in desperate need.

After spending the past three years doing absolutely nothing to help low-income families in America, Trump wants to spend the next 30 days trying to take credit for the food assistance programs that he had no hand in creating or prioritizing.  A federal food assistance program should not be used as a tool for the President to exploit taxpayer dollars for his re-election campaign.

If he really cared about poor families he'd help lift them out of poverty by supporting an increase to the minimum wage, or expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, or closing the gender pay and racial wealth gaps. But he's done none of that.
