Today, President Trump doubled down on his racist attacks against Congressman Cummings and flat-out lied about the African American community being “thankful” for his recent remarks. The President also took this time to highlight what he has done for the African American community during his Presidency. Congresswoman Karen Bass, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement in response to the latest set of lies coming from President Trump:

“Since taking office, Donald Trump has exaggerated his Administration’s economic gains for the African American community,” said Chairwoman Bass. “His Administration has consistently put forward policies aimed at dismantling our civil rights, health care, and programsused to help working-families get ahead. Donald Trump often touts that the African American unemployment number has fallen due to his efforts. But that is simply not the case. Currently, African American unemployment remains double that of White Americans and the national average despite gains in the job market. More importantly, recent reports indicate the racial wealth gap in America is worsening.  But make no mistake, the Black Caucus will continue to combat the President’s attacks by passing legislation that gives African Americans raises, strengthens the middle-class, and bolsters our HBCUs.”
