Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement on the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 (H.R. 3899) introduced today by Members of Congress in the House and the Senate:
“I am pleased that Members of the House and Senate have worked in a bipartisan manner to introduce the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014. Protecting every American’s right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, and any effort to preserve this right deserves our full consideration and support.
“While I still have significant concerns about the legislation introduced today, it is an important first step in addressing the challenges facing this country in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby v. Holder.
“I look forward to further review of this legislation with Members of the Congressional Black Caucus and to further discussion with my colleagues in the Congress.”
