Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding the House majority’s failure to avert a government shutdown:
“Next Tuesday, our government will shut down for the first time in 17 years, hurting our economy and placing the security of Americans across this country in jeopardy. By not passing a responsible continuing resolution, the House majority has once again placed partisanship over doing what is best for the American people. The jobs of more than 800,000 federal employees are at risk, causing them to face uncertainty as to how they will meet their obligations. Housing loans to low and middle income families in rural communities, small businesses and farmers will be put on hold; and job creation will slow down considerably, endangering our fragile economy.
“After 42 failed attempts to repeal and defund the Affordable Care Act, the House majority has chosen to shut down our government rather than working with President Obama and House Democrats to improve the law. Americans have already begun receiving benefits of the Affordable Care Act. By voting to delay the launch of the insurance exchanges next week, Republicans are trying to stop millions of Americans from getting the healthcare they need.
“I’ve never seen our government more dysfunctional. Instead of uniting around the principle of complete obstructionism, and unanimously supporting legislation that damages the economic progress our country has made, House Republicans should focus on recommendations that will make this country better for everyone.
“Today’s vote was a complete disappointment. It will hurt our communities and it is not good for our country. The American people deserve much better than this House majority continues to give.”
