Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge's Statement on the CBC's First Delegation to China
Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding the CBC’s first Congressional delegation to China. Upon invitation by the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and facilitated by the US-Asia Institute, ten Members of the CBC joined the delegation to visit Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong:
“On behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus, I’d like to thank the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs for hosting the CBC during the Caucus’ first Congressional delegation to China.
“Our discussions on foreign, domestic and economic policies with officials from the Chinese, Hong Kong and United States governments, and with members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, provided a comprehensive view of strategic issues and bilateral relations. These exchanges also provided CBC Members an opportunity to personally examine the current and potential impact of Chinese policies on the global community with the country’s leading officials.
“As China continues to experience exponential growth and expansion, it is critical for Members of the CBC to understand how these changes will affect the United States and particularly, the communities we represent. The CBC supports people-to-people exchanges between American and Chinese citizens, including the 100,000 Strong Initiative that encourages students to learn about life in China by studying abroad. Also, as African American students remain underrepresented in global study abroad programs, I echo former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s call to double the number of students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities who study abroad in China.
“The CBC looks forward to continuing the conversations held with officials within the Chinese and Hong Kong governments and with American citizens living abroad to ensure we remain equipped to address the issues facing our nation in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.”
