Congressional Black Caucus to Host
National Summit on Violence in Urban Communities
On Friday, July 26, 2013, Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) will host a National Summit on Violence in Urban Communities at Chicago State University in Chicago, IL.
The summit will include discussions on the causes of violence in urban communities across the nation and on ways community stakeholders and organizations, local officials and Members of Congress can collaborate on strategies to address them. The event will conclude with a national townhall discussion where Members of the CBC will announce the Caucus’s top priorities in addressing violence in urban communities. This event is free and open to the public. The event will be livestreamed at www.csu.edu.
CBC Chair Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11): “This summit is not the beginning of a conversation on violence in our communities, it is another step forward. For years, Members of the CBC have worked with local stakeholders to stop the violence that has taken so many of our young people’s lives. We’re hosting this summit because now is the time to harness all the passion we have into one place, to get the CBC, the public and community leaders on one accord, and to help every individual understand their role in taking this movement for peace in a new direction.”
Rep. Bobby Rush (IL-01): “This summit will shine light on the burgeoning problem of gun violence in Chicago and across the nation. The opportunity to address gun violence on a local and national level should change our nation’s discussion, and change our nation’s response to the issue. I look forward to the work produced from this summit and the impact it will have in stemming the devastation of gun violence in our communities.”
Rep. Danny K. Davis (IL-07): “Fifty years after the March on Washington, our community still confronts many of the same issues, some in new forms. Violence remains inextricably connected with the immense social and economic gaps which persist. We are determined to find comprehensive solutions which sharply reduce violence and its root causes and do so with a clear understanding of the burning urgency of our task.”
Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02): “The reason for this summit is simple: We’ve had enough. Enough of our family, friends and neighbors being held hostage in their communities by gun violence. Enough of our children not being free to sit on their front porches or play outside without the very real fear of being shot. But while the reason for the summit may be simple, the problem of tackling gun violence in Chicago isn’t. It’s a complex problem requiring a comprehensive solution. The summit is a step in the process of arriving at a solution.”
