Congressional Black Caucus Members to Participate as Special Guests in the
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s “Making Good Health MY Reality” Tour
Eight-city tour to visit communities where health disparities
among people of color and low income individuals are greatest
This summer and fall, Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) will participate as special guests in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) Health Braintrust “Making Good Health My Reality” tour. The eight-city tour will include a series of workshops, educational townhalls and health fairs to equip communities with critical information needed to prepare for enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace opening on October 1, 2013.
The “Making Good Health MY Reality” tour will also provide open forums for communities to discuss how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will help close gaps in health disparities within low-income communities and communities of color by ensuring all Americans have access to the patient care they need. All events during the tour will be free and open to the public.
“Often people who have access to and can afford quality healthcare take it for granted. They don’t understand what it is like to be unable to consider paying for the medicine, doctors’ appointments and care needed for themselves and their families,” said CBC Chairwoman Marcia L. Fudge.“When the Health Insurance Marketplace opens in October, around 32 million uninsured individuals, 6.8 million of them African American, will have access to affordable healthcare coverage. To someone who has always had healthcare, this may be inconsequential. But to those who’ve lived without it, it can change the trajectory of their lives.”
“As a physician who practiced in an underserved community for more than 20 years, I am painfully aware of the negative and costly health and economic impacts that result from uninsurance and inconsistent access to health care services and treatments,” added Congresswoman Donna Christensen, Chair of the CBC Health Braintrust. “My colleagues and I are hosting and participating in these townhalls because we know that African Americans, other racial and ethnic minorities, and low-income and rural Americans – all of whom we represent in Congress – stand to gain the very most when the health care access expansion provisions are implemented when the Health Insurance Marketplace opens and when state and territory Medicaid programs expand. We want to empower our constituents with accurate and clear information that they will need to make good health their reality.”
The CBCF Health Braintrust “Making Good Health MY Reality” tour will visit the following cities:
- Fredericksted, U.S. Virgin Islands, Saturday, July 20, 2013
- Chicago, Illinois, Saturday, July 27, 2013
