CBC Chair Marcia L. Fudge’s Statement on the Fisher v. University of Texas-Austin Decision
Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge released the following statement on the United States Supreme Court decision on Fisher v. University of Texas-Austin:
“Today, the Supreme Court preserved the principle that race and ethnicity can be used as one factor in creating a diverse environment on U.S. college campuses. This decision acknowledges the positive impact diversity has on students’ learning experiences and consequently, our country’s future.
“Affirmative action policies used by institutions in our society recognize that structural racism in our nation’s past has, in some ways, denied equal access and opportunity for people of color. These policies continue to open doors that have traditionally been shut to individuals from persistently underrepresented communities. They are also used to level an unequal playing field so that every individual has an opportunity to achieve his or her educational and economic goals.
“I am pleased with today’s decision by the Supreme Court and I am hopeful the University of Texas at Austin’s policies will be upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals.“
