CBC Chair Marcia Fudge's Statement on Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council Decision

Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona decision that struck down an Arizona law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote:

“Today, the Supreme Court made a decision in favor of and in the best interest of our democracy. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993, also known as The Motor Voter Act, encouraged more active participation in our democracy; the Arizona law struck down today by the Court, would have severely restricted it.

“This decision is a great victory for voters in Arizona and in every state. It is also a testament to the work of voting rights advocates across the country. Throughout history, nefarious efforts to discourage voters from casting their ballots have persisted, but because of the dedication of those committed to protecting every individual’s constitutional rights, they have been stopped. In the same way, contemporary attempts at disenfranchisement in this country must be recognized and denounced.

“The Congressional Black Caucus is pleased with today’s Supreme Court decision and will continue to be supportive of legislation that eliminates barriers to voting. We will also continue to be vocal about our objection to laws that make it more difficult for any eligible voter to have their voice heard by having their vote counted.”
