Since its establishment in 1971, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has been committed to using the full Constitutional power, statutory authority, and financial resources of the federal government to ensure that African Americans and other marginalized communities in the United States have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:
“The unfounded indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James is yet another example of Donald Trump’s corrupt misuse of the criminal justice system to target those who have worked to hold him accountable. President Trump has made clear through his own public comments against Attorney General James that the goal of this indictment is simply to exact retribution against his political opponents.
“Attorney General James’ entire career has been dedicated to upholding the rule of law, and she has remained unwavering in her pursuit of justice — including her successful civil fraud case against President Trump last year, which resulted in multiple lawsuits challenging his administration's policies.
“The CBC stands firmly behind Attorney General James and applauds her courage and fortitude. The American people see this corrupt prosecution for what it is — a desperate attempt by President Trump to weaponize the justice system. It will not withstand public or legal scrutiny. Those who blindly follow Trump’s orders to malign and baselessly prosecute his political opponents will inevitably be held accountable.”
